ABOUT

There's a moment every student has — when something that never quite made sense suddenly clicks. When confidence replaces uncertainty. When they walk into an exam room knowing they're ready. That moment is what I work towards with every student I teach.

Hi, I'm Imran - founder and Head Tutor here at London Tutor Club.

A bit about myself - I'm a qualified teacher with a PGCE from King's College London, Qualified Teacher Status and over half a decade of teaching experience across London schools and private tutoring. In my career as a teacher, I was fortunate enough to teach at a school that achieved the highest Progress-8 score in the country — a national measure of student progress. This gave me a deep understanding of what it takes to help students improve and succeed.

One thing I learnt is that any student can improve, regardless of where they are; and it's rarely to do with ability. Every student thinks and works differently; it's about finding the right explanation for the right student at the right time. This is something I bring to every session and an approach which has proven to be very successful. Here are some of the comments I received from parents:

"Patient, explained complex concepts well, enabling my son to achieve his grades."

"Builds a great rapport with his students."

"My daughter achieved the grade she wanted."

I have a genuine passion for teaching and there is nothing quite like seeing a student reach their potential. For me, a parent calling on results day, excited to tell me that their child got the grade they had been working towards all year — that never gets old.

Every student and parent deserves that moment.

Your journey towards it starts here.

     5 - 3 + 2 = ?

HINT: Remember to use BIDMAS

I've asked this question to students of all ages across various schools in London. You may be surprised to know that the results are almost always split - half of the students say 0, and the other half say 4.

Here is the reality.

The HINT is there to confuse you. The moment we see 'BIDMAS', we think 'addition comes before subtraction' in the acronym and try to calculate 3 + 2 first. This is already a step in the wrong direction, and under the time pressures of examinations, a very easy mistake to make and one that will lose you many valuable marks.

Without the hint, I am certain that everyone would get this question correct. But it wouldn't demonstrate whether you have understood the rules of arithmetic. By changing the wording and giving you the hint, it puts this to the test. Do you really understand how BIDMAS works?

Exams are no different. Each question is trying to test a particular skill. The questions are phrased intentionally to test these skills and students need to demonstrate to examiners the logic behind their answers.

At London Tutor Club, we teach students how to:

  • Decode examiner language - look past the complicated phrasing and get to the root of what the question is asking.

  • Defend their logic - whether you answered 0, or 4 to the question above, you should be able to explain logically, how you got there. Examiners mark your process - not just your result.

  • Build solid processes - exams are stressful and our minds can go blank when we're overwhelmed in these high pressure situations. Having processes to fall back on to help us logically move through questions can be the difference between underperforming and achieving the high grades you deserve.

Let's work together to make your targets a reality.

Oh, and if you're still curious, the answer is:  4

See you soon :)
